  12. I. INSTALLING THE OMNIPEDIA
  13. ---------------------------
  14. From the Program Manager, choose "Run" from the file menu. If
  15. your CD-ROM drive is letter D, type "D:\SETUP.EXE" and click 
  16. "OK". This will begin the Omnipedia installation routine. 
  17. Follow the onscreen instructions. We recommend that you 
  18. install all the options, for best performance.

  21. II.FILES
  22. --------
  23. The Omnipedia copies many files to your hard disk. These will
  24. be automatically copied to the appropriate directories during
  25. installation. If you are curious about what files are being
  26. installed where, refer to the file "FILEINFO.TXT" on the CD.

  29. III.BASIC INSTALLATION
  30. ----------------------
  31. The basic installation (required) copies several files into a
  32. new directory on your hard disk. (You choose the name and the
  33. location of that directory during Setup.) These files are...
  34.  
  35. - "ST_OMNI.EXE" (the application)
  36. -  A directory named "BL" (containing required utility files)
  37. - "COLOR.DLL", "FILEIO.DLL" (ancilliary functions)
  38. - "STARTREK.INI" (file which contains your CD-ROM drive letter)
  39.                  (edit this file if it changes)
  40. - "README.TXT"   (this file)
  41. -  Quicktime for Windows (video technology from Apple Computer)
  42.  
  43. These will consume less than 2,000K on your hard disk. However,
  44. performance of Omnipedia will suffer if you do not also choose
  45. "OPTIMAL INSTALLATION", described below.

  48. IV.OPTIMAL INSTALLATION
  49. -----------------------
  50. We strongly suggest that in addition to the basic installation,
  51. you also choose the "Optimal Installation" option. This will 
  52. copy the file named "OMNI1.DXR" into your new directory. Although 
  53. it requires an additional 13mb of space on your hard disk, 
  54. Omnipedia will perform better, and you will be ready to update 
  55. the program with updates of new entries as they become available 
  56. in the future.

  59. V.SPEECH RECOGNITION
  60. --------------------
  61. For information regarding this option, please see
  62. the readme file "SPEECH.TXT".

  65. VI.ADJUSTING YOUR SYSTEM
  66. ------------------------
  67. You may pre-set your monitor to any SVGA setting from
  68. 256 colors (8-bit) to Millions of Colors (24-bit), although the
  69. product is optimized for 8-bit or 16-bit color. The fixed image 
  70. size of Omnipedia is 640x480, although the photo and 
  71. video windows can be dragged anywhere.

  73. Running other applications, especially networking software, while 
  74. Omnipedia is running can cause poor performance. We highly 
  75. recommend quitting any other program (including TSR's), turning 
  76. off networking, and disabling any kind of custom shell program,
  77. before running Omnipedia. Be advised that inadequate DOS memory 
  78. is frequently the cause of poor performance or missing graphics 
  79. or sound.

  82. VII.RUNNING OMNIPEDIA
  83. ---------------------
  84. 1. Put the Omnipedia CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.
  85. 2. From the Program Manager, double-click the "Omnipedia" icon in the
  86. "Star Trek Omnipedia" group.

  89. VIII.TROUBLESHOOTING SPEECH RECOGNITION, WEIRD COMPAQ PROBLEM, 
  90.      ENSONIQ SOUND CARDS

  92. TROUBLESHOOTING SPEECH RECOGNITION
  93. If Voice Recognition is not working, be sure your microphone
  94. is plugged into your sound card and is functioning properly.

  96. To make sure your microphone is functioning properly, do the following:
  97.  
  98. 1. Within the Accessories Group, there is an icon called "Sound Recorder."
  99. 2. Double click on "Sound Recorder".
  100. 3. Click on the Record button to verify that your microphone is
  101.    connected and functiuoning properly.

  104. ENSONIQ CARDS
  105. If you have an Ensoniq Soundscape card and experience a 
  106. General Protection Fault running the Omnipedia, contact
  107. Ensoniq Technical Support at (610) 647-3195 for
  108. the latest drivers or contact Ensoniq BBS at (610) 647-3195
  109. to download the latest drivers.

  113. COMPAQ COMPUTERS
  114. We have encountered a problem when using Omnipedia on
  115. Compaq machines while using Compaq Wallpaper (the background
  116. graphic with the Compaq logo repeating.) We suggest
  117. that the wallpaper be turned off or set to NONE.
